Walter Blanding conducts the Juilliard Orchestra in this performance of “Black, Brown, and Beige.” This extended work was written by Duke Ellington for his first concert at Carnegie Hall, on January 23, 1943. It was intended to elevate American music, specifically jazz, to be on par with European classical music and challenge America to live up to its founding principles of freedom and equality for all.
