Carlos Simon’s “The Block” | Pre-College Orchestra
Preparatory • 25-Feb-2023
Tito Muñoz conducts the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra in performing Carlos Simon’s “The Block.” This short orchestral study inspired the late visual artist Romare Bearden’s series of six paintings also titled “The Block.” Just as Bearden’s paintings incorporated various mediums to express the rich energy and joyous scenery of Harlem, Simon explores various musical textures in this piece to highlight the inspiration found in this hotbed of African American culture.
